Yellowstone National Park

90 miles north of the Town of Jackson, Yellowstone is the oldest National Park in the world covering nearly 3,500 square miles of northwestern Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana.  A number of tour operations run day trips from Jackson or it is an easy drive should you want to spend a day there on your own.  Given traffic and high summer season, a day trip is usually a very long 12 - 14 hour+ day.

Weather & Altitude

WEATHER: Weather in a mountain town can be highly unpredictable and can change in a second!  Bring layers, a rain jacket, and plenty of comfortable clothes.  Late August can see snow on the mountains or cold and rainy 50 degree days.  We are hoping the weather stays true to August patterns with highs in the 70's/80's and lows in the 50's/60's.... but the moral of the story is come prepared for any type of weather!

ALTITUDE: Jackson is located at 6,451 feet with even higher elevations reached when hiking or visiting the top of the Gondola (9,095 feet) or the Tram (10,450 feet).  Drink plenty of water during your visit in the mountains and don't forget to wear sunscreen!

Whitewater Rafting & Scenic Floats

Sands Whitewater
Charlie Sands is one of the pioneers of whitewater rafting in Jackson Hole.  They call him one of the "Sultans of the Snake River" and Catherine worked for Charlie in 2006 and 2007!  Check out Charlie's history here...  Sands Whitewater continues to be leading rafting company in Jackson and we recommend the 8 mile whitewater section of the Snake River (8-man raft for a more adventurous journey, 14-man raft for those just wanting to hold on!)  It's a 3-hour trip door-to-door and lots of fun!

Barker-Ewing Scenic Float
Float 10 miles of the Snake River through Grand Teton National Park!  This is the best scenic float in the Jackson area with views of the Tetons the entire trip and usually a few Bald Eagle sightings too...

Our Favorite hikes

Our Favorite hikes

Great source for all things hiking:   Teton.Hiking.Trails.com
Ski Lake - Teton Pass - It's about a 4-5 mile round trip and you hike through wildflowers to reach a glacier lake.  The trail can be accessed from the Phillips Trailhead.  To access from the Phillips Trailhead, head out to Wilson on WY 22 and head up Teton pass towards Idaho.  A few miles up (before you get to the top of the pass...) you will see a sign on your right for Phillips Canyon and a small dirt road.  Park either here below the kiosk or across the highway in the larger parking area.  The Ski Lake Trail starts just up the road past the kiosk on your left.  Follow the Phillips Pass Trail up into the large open meadow where you’ll cross a small bridge.  The junction for Ski Lake is just past the bridge on the edge of the meadow.  Take the left fork to get to the lake.
Snow King Mountain - Town of Jackson - A 1.8 mile trail ascending 1,500 vertical feet to the top of Snow King Mountain.  The scenic views from the top are breathtaking. You can see the Grand Tetons, Teton Pass, a glimpse of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, The National Elk Refuge straight across, Gros Ventre & Sleeping Indian and of course you can see the Town of Jackson Hole just at the base of The King.  Just drive to the base and start hiking!  For a few dollars you can ride the chair lift back down if you want to spare your legs the downhill portion.
Granite Canyon – Moderate to difficult, depending on length of hike. This goes to the top of the Tram (15 miles), but you can go up as little or much as you want.
Surprise & Amphitheater Lakes -Difficult - “A Teton Classic”This ten-mile round trip is a Teton classic, but because it climbs about 3,000 vertical feet over five miles it is considered difficult. An early start is recommended.
Bradley & Taggart Lakes – Quiet 2.5 Mile hike in GTNP. Another classic Teton hike, this one is generally a bit less busy than Hidden Falls. Leaving the parking lot 2.5 miles north ofthe Moose Visitor Center the trail soon divides, one to the south and one to the north, and these paths reunite at Taggart Lake.
Leigh, Bearpaw & Trapper Lakes – Easy hike with stunning views of the Tetons. This straightforward, flat hike offers stunning views of the sheer north faces of the main Teton peaks. Leave your car at the String Lake parking lot and head north along a well-marked path.
Jenny Lake and Hidden Falls – Easy hike with a boat ride ($15 adult, $8 child round trip) across the lake. This is a great spot for children and families as the boat ride is fun in and of itself and you can walk up to the waterfalls at Hidden Falls or not, and it is still pretty. Boats leave from Jenny Lake to Hidden Falls about every 20 minutes.
